Intercoastal Waterway, Day 5, Aug. 10

It is hard to believe this is my 5th day traveling on the Intercoastal Waterway. Weather is again marvelous, and I got a nice photo of the Sunrise this morning.

Our passage today takes across the Albemarle Sound, 14 miles to the North River. We’ll travel up the river and enter the Carolina Cut, where we’ll find the Coinjock Marina. I enjoyed crossing the sound. The wind was up enough to make 1 to 2-foot seas with some white caps.  It was lumpy. There is a photo as we entered the marked channel.  No land on the horizon. Our course took us through 100’s of crab pot buoys.  This kept us on our toes but other than 2 small crab boats we saw no other craft until we made the North River. While we usually cruised at around 8 or 9 knots, Doug put Smitten on a plane around 14 knots and that smoothed the passage.

The winding North River was interesting.  We saw fish traps and duck blinds.  Approaching the Cut, we came upon a pushboat and barge that we quickly overtook or we would have had to follow it up the Cut.  They are slow, 45 min after we were docked the barge came by us in the narrow channel. I took a photo of some traffic as we entered the cut.

Christy and Doug’s friends Jim Pittman and Carol Barnes (both artists) and their niece Robyn Joined us at the marina for drinks on the fantail (sic) and dinner at the Marina restaurant.

Docked near us was the 164-foot-long “She’s a 10”, the Patriots owner’s yacht. Google it, it is quite a boat.
